Day 37 – Prague

We had to check out to move rooms, and then check in again – bit of a hassle. Breakfast was provided and very plain, but at the end of the day, free food is free food. They also provided us with bagettes to take with us for lunch (ham and cheese or the vetetarian option of just cheese).

The Old town was right beside us, closer than we thought and we found out that our hostel did free tours at 11am. We might as well wait for it as I hadn’t planned a tour day yet. The tour guide was Irish and ginger and pretty funny. He told us to watch the Clock Tower show on the hour before the tour because it was so good. It was actually shockingly bad – and voted one of the most disappointing attractions in Europe – but hilariously funny at the same time.

Instead of everyone selling selfie sticks like in Italy, they were selling segway rides. These segway riders were everywhere and if you wern’t aware of your surrondings, you would be knocked down a few times. They had even asked us when we were on our walking tour – as if we were going to follow the tour on our segways and look like two lazy idiots.

We listened to some funny stories about the history of Prague and also watched our tour guide climb up a womb. Yes, it was actually a ‘modernistic’ statue of a woman with a hole where you might expect to find one. U can climb up and lower yourself out again, headfirst just like birth. We also visited a church where a real arm hung from the wall. It was the arm of a robber who tried to rob the church only to be held by the statue of the Virgin Mary. The next day when the priest found this man dangling in the air, they had to cut off the robbers hand and now it is hung as a warning to all church robbers.

After the tour, we were going to eat our free baguettes but they were truly horrible – as hungry as I was I couldn’t stomach them. Instead, we went for a classic Czech lunch before passing by the train station to reserve seats for tomorrow night – didn’t want to have another problem with fully booked trains! Unfortunately, we were still too late and the direct train only had one seat left. Instead we had to get the 2 stop train for €3. At least it was cheap.

The other thing I wanted to do in Prague was to go to a classical concert as we didn’t get to in Vienna. We visited the theatre and they had so many options, but I picked the best one for tomorrow that would make sure we wouldn’t miss our train as well.

It was a tiring day of waking so we went back to our hostel for a nap. We were woken up by 4 American girls who were also in our room. My girlfriend and I had our beds in a loft area above and so we gave the girls quite a fright when we came down to get ready.

Prague is renowned for its nightlife amongst other things and so we thought we would need to give it a try, unlike in Budapest. The best place we could remember seeing today was an Irish bar and so that was our first stop. It actually had a nice Irish feel except for the 2 Russian waitresses. We left to go to a very cheap place where we got 2 drinks and 2 baskets of bread for the same price as one drink at the Irish bar. However, the bread wasn’t nice and it was so warm that we had to drink quickly and leave because we couldn’t bear it.

Next, we found a restaurant/bar and looked at the wine menu. The waiter had suggested several expensive wines and I went along with him, before buying the cheapest bottle they had in the end. I also spilled my girlfriend’s drink in the candel with wine and wax going everywhere whilst trying to grab the menu. Nobody noticed and I think I got away with it.

After 3 weeks of trying to teach my girfriend Italian, she had only now just started saying Grazie to everyone, except now we were nowhere near Italy and everyone was giving her odd looks. As usual, my girlfriend needed to go to the toilet once we left the place so we needed to find another bar just for that. Thankfully it wasn’t a problem or no doubt I’d be huffing with her again.

The 4 American girls must have been still out partying by the time we got home and they didn’t wake us up this time when they arrived back. It was insanely warm up in this loft bit and I struggled to get to sleep for quite a while.
