Day 48 – Cannes

We actually did something today and left just after 10am to visit Cannes! We walked to the train station and took ages getting tickets. Everyone else seemed to struggle as well because there wasn’t an English option and we all had to try and buy two return tickets in French. Unfortunatly my GCSE French could only help me say I liked math and ask if you had a pen. The train station was buzzing with people and 3 people got arrested for something, we didn’t know what it was but they were accompanied by almost 20 police officers.

As usual, my girlfriend managed to get a seat in the busy train, even with the beach umbrella in her hand. We got off and followed the crowd, assuming they were going to the beach too. They led us right to it and we looked at a few restaurants for something to eat. Most places were selling burgers for €13 but a burger van sold them for €4.50. We chosenthe cheaper option and they were actually nice.

The sand on the beach was a lot better than the stones in Nice, although it felt like tiny, tiny stones instead of normal sand. It was weird but still satisfactory and we swam and sun bathed all day. I even swam the full way out to the buoys, further than anyone else ‘like a lad’ and it took ages to come back. I needed a rest after all that activity and so an ice cream and slush puppy was in order.

I finished my book today as well,  meaning that I have read 7 books since day 1 and I felt pretty happy about that, I usually don’t have time to read anymore. The train wasn’t as busy as earlier but I was shouted at in French, something about having my feet up I think. My girlfriend was also teetering on the brink of sleep. The train was about to fall apart and was covered in so much graffiti that you couldn’t even see out the windows. The air conditioning was obviously broken too so it warmed up like an oven.

When we walked home, despite the good job the sweat was doing, I got a quick shower and whilst my girlfriend was getting hers, I left to find the airport bus stop, which had also moved recently and after asking a couple of bus drivers, I was getting nowhere and left. On the way back, I got a 49 cent bottle of lemonade, paid only in 2 cents and 1 cents before getting a pizza from the nearby pizzeria that had an offer of all pizzas for €6. Bloody steal!

I waited for the pizza and the man kept saying monsieur, monsieur but I thought that he was on the phone, not telling me that my order was ready. He didn’t really find it funny either. We had our pizza, the remaining pasta we still had, finished our cocktails and tried to google where this elusive bus stop was. We also had to pack for the last time and get an early night as we were up early. Last night on our travels though, I can’t say I got too emotional.
