This morning we decided not to rush to the pool and get a bed to treat ourselves to a lie in. We went for breakfast and tried the crepes this time. They were pretty good to be fair, soaked in maple syrup, but they still don’t meet the crepes dad used to make for the Portsalon crew during our holidays.
As Louis shoulders were still a touch pink (Quote – “I never burn, we only need 1 bottle of suncream for a 2 week holiday”)…..we thought it was best he kept them out of the sun today. Instead of tanning by the pool, the receptionist booked us a taxi to head into Rethymno to explore the old town.
The taxi arrived within 5 minutes and after a short journey we had arrived by the harbour. Louis had tried to have a conversation with the driver on the way in but didn’t get far. He would ask questions but just got an “ok” and a smile through the rear view mirror. I of course found this hilarious and just giggled my way in. Brownie points though to the driver who must of noticed my new embellishment and kept referring to me as his wife.
We arranged that he would pick us up again at 2pm and off we went for our Tour by Louis. Im sure all of you fans already know this but Louis likes to pretend he is a tour guide when we visit places. I get marched around looking at all the ‘interesting’ things to see and even worse, have to pretend I’m interested. Something that stood out to me was the number of plants and flowers everyone had. Fair play to them keeping them alive in this heat I thought. I can’t even keep my own hanging baskets alive for longer than a week in the bucketing rain.
After a walk along the harbour and the seafront, we explored the old fortress. We must have arrived at the perfect time because everything was so quiet and empty, but when we were leaving, there was a queue to get in. We dandered back into the old town streets and stopped for a drink. Louis enjoyed a lemon and strawberry lemonade, I chose the pomegranate juice due to its benefits. I’ll let you chose which ones I was hoping for.
Directly in front of the cafe was the famous Rethymno water fountain. Of course, every good city needs a water fountain. We both took a sip as it’s said that if you drink from the fountain you’ll be sure to return again. As we walked towards the park, we stopped by a skincare shop in the hope to buy some miracle healing cream so Louis could catch some rays in the afternoon when we returned. The woman in the shop was very friendly and made us try on every cream she had. For the first cream she said “this one very good”, for the second cream she said “this one very, very good”… we ended up purchasing the one which was very X10 good because we ran out of appropriate body parts for her to rub on to us.
We also went to visit the cathedral but unfortunately there was a funeral on so we couldn’t enter. I’m sure it was just like the other church we visited 5 minutes before although only slight bigger.
Having being forced to watch snooker at home, I have become very sure that with a little bit of practice I could beat Ronnie O’Sullivan. You don’t have to have abs, you don’t have to have speed… all you have to do it hit a few balls into the net. Louis has doubted this theory for a while now, so when we passed a sports bar with a pool table (yes I know snooker and pool are different) I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to prove him wrong. Now, I’ll admit I didn’t win a game and I have some practise to do, but I’m sure Louis will admit I really did impress him. So much so he started using the usual “awww you’re just getting lucky” statement all boys seem to do when they might lose. I also must add that the owner asked Louis if he played a lot, this made his day.
On our way back to get our taxi we spotted a Vegan restaurant which sold veggie greek gyros. I wasn’t hungry so didn’t have anything but within 1 minute Louis had scoffed down a full pita and said it was amazing. The restaurant was called Lets Vegan, for anyone who wants to give them a try for themselves.
It was 2pm and still no sign of the taxi. He had let us down. We did wait an extra 15mins just incase he was stuck in traffic but enough was enough and we ran across the road and hopped into another taxi who took us back to the hotel. When we got back we had a sandwich and some nachos from the pool food truck. The sun wasn’t as hot as it was after 3 and the miracle cream seemed to be working so we lay by the pool for the remainder of the day. Louis had a business call with Nicky and I slept and read another chapter of my book.
When we went back up to our room, I got showered and ready for dinner and Louis tuned into the Lions match. After half time we were both starving so went down for dinner. Tonight’s dinner was a bit of a disappointment. It was greek night, and having had food envy from Louis’ gyros he had at lunch, I already had my eyes set on one for dinner. Unfortunately there was none and everything veggie had prawns in it. Louis also spent his whole time refreshing the match to see the score. Thankfully they won.
After dinner, we sneaked into the open air cinema but quickly left as it was a bit boring. Straight to the bar for some drinks and onto bed with a baileys to watch the only other english tv programme on other than the news… a programme about lady’s part. Lovely!
