Day 9 – Dubrovnik

There was a new girl at the desk this morning and she was lovely compared to the other girl. She informed us that the ferry workers were striking today. Not like in the UK when everything stops, more like they will still work, just very slowly, i.e a 2 hr journey could take 5. Instead of gettting the ferry, we got the bus early in the morning as that would take 4hrs.

My girlfriend and I had a domestic over food as she didn’t want anything for lunch and then she did and then she didn’t. Whilst she sat on the bus, I ran along the waterfront to find shops and found nothing! Luckily, the bus stopped in Bosnia to allow us to take pictures and gather supplies in the underground supermarket. Bosnia don’t seem to like Tesco meal deals either, so we made do with a packet of chocolate biscuits and some breadsticks.

Arriving at the bus station we were met with an onslaught of people, mainly old ladies and men, offering their rooms and beds for a night, all of which sounded a bit dodgy. Thankfully we had other arrangements and marched on to find them. As my girlfriend was sleeping in Budapest, I was busy organising somewhere to stay in Dubrovnik, booking a family run kind of thing (I hope).

Our bed was a cute loft type room, that actually had 4 beds and an ensuite, it had a washing machine, cooker, fridge and even a balcony with a terrific view. I did well here and my girlfriend knew it. The lady who showed us everything was actually the mother of the person who runs these rooms above her house. She was very kind, offering us juice as she knew her house was up a lot of steps. Giving us all of her local knowledge, she left to go water her plants and leave us to get settled in. It was time for a nice shower, organise our bags and just relax by the sea. We didn’t do anything special except go for dinner, which took ages because my girlfriend is still so indecisive. Travel trip – try and ask her what kind of food she is craving or suggest some types before you leave so she has a rough idea. Otherwise you will be walking about like you were 7 and following your mummy around the shop.

A small trip to the shop got us a bottle of wine for the night, to celebrate a cheap apartment with a balcony view I guess, and some breakfast for the morning. After getting in and out of the shop jaut before it closes, we listened to some Frank Sinatra and drank our slightly more expensive, but not slightly nicer wine whilst planning our day tomorrow, back in the apartment.
